RESIDENT UPDATES/PRESS RELEASES

Policy Updates

  • Council President Sheffield along with the Coalition for Property Tax Justice continue to lead efforts to mitigate damages and to find means to compensate Detroit Homeowners for over taxation. Read more here: https://illegalforeclosures.org/
  • Right to Counsel: Council President Mary Sheffield has introduced an ordinance to move forward Right To Counsel that will give thousands of at risk Detroiters legal representation in eviction cases. This would make Detroit the next major city to provide this right to it’s residents. Read more about it here: https://www.uchcdetroit.org/right-to-counsel
  • As Detroiters worry about access to affordable transportation, the International Transport Workers Federation(ITF) and environmental groups around the world call for expansion of public transport in cities: https://www.itfglobal.org/en/news/public-transport-must-double-in-cities-over-next-decade-meet-15degc-target

IT’S BLACK HISTORY MONTH!

Detroit District 2 celebrates the legacy of civil rights pioneer and Detroit resident,

Mrs. Rosa Parks!

Ms. Parks

“Rosa Louise Parks was nationally recognized as the “mother of the modern day civil rights movement” in America. Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white male passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, December 1, 1955, triggered a wave of protest December 5, 1955 that reverberated throughout the United States. Her quiet courageous act changed America, its view of black people and redirected the course of history.”

On February 1, 2022, Councilmember Calloway presented a statement of support in adopting a resolution supporting President Biden’s seating of the first African American woman as the next Supreme Court Justice. This has been referred to committee and hopefully will be adopted during Black History Month.
