Mayor Duggan, Community Leaders Encourage Uninsured Drivers to Take Advantage of Expiring Auto Insurance Amnesty Period

Auto Insurance reminder

With the January 1, 2022 deadline looming, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox, and Reverend Dr. Wendell Anthony urged Detroiters to take advantage of the state’s uninsured motorist amnesty period, a key consumer protection that has already allowed more than 100,000 previously uninsured Michiganders to buy penalty-free auto insurance.

The amnesty period gives those who have allowed their auto insurance coverage to lapse the opportunity to purchase a policy without facing penalties or increased premiums if they apply for coverage with a licensed insurance agent or insurance company before the deadline.

Consumers who have questions about the new law, including the amnesty period, should contact DIFS Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at (877) 999-6442 or by emailing autoinsurance@michigan.gov.

Consumers can also find frequently asked questions, tips for shopping for insurance, and an insurance locator to help find licensed agents by visiting Michigan.gov/AutoInsurance.

Clay Center groundbreaking

Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO) leaders came together with City of Detroit officials recently to break ground on phase two of the Detroit Healthy Housing Center – the first of its kind in the state to help combat chronic homelessness.

The 22,000-square-foot facility is the final phase of the Detroit Healthy Housing Campus (DHHC), part of a $22-million vision to offer transformative health and social services to help homeless individuals transition into permanent housing.

The DHHC will provide a low-barrier emergency shelter, a 17-bed medical respite for homeless to receive continuing care post-hospitalization, a fully integrated health care clinic open to the public, and other on-site wraparound services, including job readiness training. The healthcare clinic will be accessible for primary care, behavioral health, dental services, and a pharmacy.
