The City of Detroit’s Department of Public Works is letting residents know that their regularly scheduled bi-weekly collection of yard waste in the first two weeks of December will be their last for the year. Collection will resume in April 2019.

Between now and the final December collection, contractors will continue to remove grass clippings, leaves and small twigs placed in biodegradable paper bags or a 32-gallon container labeled “yard waste” only on your regularly scheduled bi-weekly day of collection. There will be no waste collections scheduled on Thanksgiving Day.

Items should be placed at the curb at least six feet away from the Courville refuse container and in the event that you miss your collection day during this period, you may take your yard waste to one of the free drop off facilities listed below. Please remember that yard waste placed in plastic bags will NOT be collected.

How to avoid missing the last collection!

“We know that with busy holiday schedules, it can be easy for residents to lose track of when their next collection date is,” said DPW Director Ron Brundidge. “We don’t want anyone to miss theirs so we are offering two convenient ways for residents to make sure they know when their yard waste is scheduled for pickup.”

First, Brundidge said, residents can receive reminder text messages by texting their address to 313-800-7905. By opting into the program, residents will receive text reminders the day before their collection. They also can opt to receive reminders for bulk pickup and recycling pickup.

Residents also are encouraged to use the new My Home feature on front of www.detroitmi.gov to see their scheduled yard waste, bulk & recycling pickup schedule.

What if I still have yard waste after my final collection?

Brundidge added that the city also offers several locations for residents to drop off their yard waste if they miss their final scheduled collection. There is no charge for Detroit residents to take advantage of these conveniently located drop off centers.
