Mayor Duggan’s statement on approval of Senate Bill 1234
Today, the Michigan House of Representatives voted unanimously to approve Senate Bill 1234, which will automatically extend property tax exemptions for low-income homeowners for the next year. This follows unanimous approval two weeks ago in the Senate.
This bill also helps senior citizens by having their tax exemptions last for three years instead of just one before they have to apply for renewal.
I was pleased to be given the opportunity to testify in Lansing recently in support of this legislation, which will help 9000 Detroit homeowners with current property tax exemptions breathe easier for another year and not have to worry about losing their home to tax foreclosure.
I would like to thank Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, Speaker Lee Chatfield, Senators Jim Runestad, Stephanie Chang and Aric Nesbitt, Representatives Wendell Byrd and Brant Iden, as well as our partners at the United Community Housing Coalition and Quicken Loans for their leadership and support getting this important legislation passed.
I look forward to Gov. Whitmer signing this bipartisan legislation at her first opportunity, once the Senate concurs.
